Home Education- The Basics

We sort of just fell into HE (Home Ed). It wasn't a life long dream or for religious or political reasons. It was because we had to. I made a split second decision and did it. Then crapped my pants. But I needn't have! Listen, I get it's not for everyone. It's not the norm and if it isn't the norm then in most peoples eyes, it's wrong. I don't want to convert anyone or be self righteous- it just works for us. Every child deserves the right to an education and my children get a good one! Just not at school.

Is it illegal??  No. All children are HE by default. As parents we opt into school.

How do they socialise??  When they are lucky enough to be let out of my cupboard under the stairs, I sometimes let them look at children playing outside through the window ...
Seriously, when do they NOT socialise? Home Ed is different to Home school. I don't recreate school in my front room and chain them to a desk for 6 hours straight. We are out at groups, classes, meet ups and trips pretty much daily. My girls are mad social, trust me.

Are you a teacher??  No but I'm not a moron either. This sort of notion that all teachers are certified members of MENSA is false. I also know my limitations. Tanisha has started working towards her GCSE's. I cannot possibly help her through maths, so with about 10 other HE children, she has a tutor. The girls also have a science teacher. Educators outside of a school setting?! That's just crazy talk!

But how do they do PE??  Kayaking, horse riding, kick boxing, trampolining, gymnastics, dog walking, a paper round, street dance, going to the gym (Tanisha)..... next question!

Did you have to get permission??  This isn't North Korea love! As parents we still have some rights!

Yeah but doesn't it make kids invisible?? social services should do regular checks!!  My kids see teachers, tutors, friends (both HE and schooled) a GP, physio, consultant, dentist, orthodontist,
neighbours, family, local newsagent, librarian, people at the stables... They are so visible! Do you need a check from social services in the 6 week holiday to make sure you're not abusing your child? Obviously they aren't seeing teachers so are vulnerable to abuse..... No? Thought not.

Don't you ever just want a break from them??  Sometimes but not often. I like them! I like their company, they're pretty cool kids.

What can I say? I just dig Home Ed. It works for us. I'm all about questions so if there is anything you'd like to ask me, go for it! There is a huge amount of info online and other mums out there with a wealth of knowledge on the subject that I can only dream of! Maybe have a look? You might dig Home Ed too.
